Coloured Canyon Tour from Sharm El Sheikh

A Coloured Canyon tour from Sharm El Sheikh takes you deep into the Sinai interior, to one of the most beautiful natural walks in Egypt. The canyon sits near Nuweiba, a few hours north of the coast, where wind and water have carved a narrow passage through soft sandstone over millions of years. The walls rise high on either side, streaked with red, orange, purple and gold, and in places they close in so tightly you can touch both sides at once.

This is a desert experience rather than a beach one, and it suits travellers who want to see the real Sinai away from the resorts. I am Mo, a local guide based in Sharm El Sheikh, and I run this trip in a calm, unhurried way so you have time to look up, take photos, and understand what you are walking through. Below is everything you need to know before you go.

What the Coloured Canyon Actually Is

The Coloured Canyon is a dry riverbed canyon in the South Sinai desert, roughly 800 metres long with walls reaching up to around 40 metres high. It was not cut by a permanent river. Instead, rare flash floods and centuries of wind slowly wore down layers of sedimentary rock that were laid down when this whole region lay beneath a shallow sea.

The colours come from minerals in the stone. Iron and manganese oxides give the deep reds, browns and purples, while other compounds add softer yellows and pale greens. As you move through the passage the bands shift and twist, and the way the light falls changes everything. Early morning and late afternoon are when the walls glow most, which is something I plan around when I time the trip.

Unlike a viewpoint you photograph and leave, the canyon is something you walk inside. That is what makes it memorable. You are surrounded by the rock on all sides, in deep quiet, with only the sound of your own footsteps in the sand.

The Walk: How Long and How Hard

The good news for most travellers is that this is an easy-to-moderate walk, not a demanding hike. The canyon floor is mostly soft sand and smooth rock, and you follow it gently downhill through the heart of the canyon. Walking the main stretch takes around an hour and a half at a relaxed pace, with plenty of stops for photos.

There are a few short sections where you climb down over rock steps or squeeze through narrow gaps. These are not technical, but they ask for a little balance and a steadying hand, and there is usually a modest climb to get back out at the end. I am there for every one of these spots to show you the easiest footing and give a hand where it helps.

Who It Suits and Combining It with Dahab

This trip works well for couples, friends, solo travellers and families with older children who are happy to walk and clamber a little. Active kids tend to love the narrow passages and the sense of exploring. It is less suited to very young children, anyone with serious mobility limits, or travellers who would rather stay near the water all day.

Because the canyon lies between the coast and Dahab, it pairs naturally with a wider day in Sinai. Many guests combine it with a stop in the relaxed town of Dahab for lunch by the sea, and some add a visit to the famous Blue Hole for a swim or a snorkel. It is a long but rewarding day that blends desert and coast in one trip. Tell me what you are hoping for and I will shape the route around it rather than rushing you through a fixed schedule.

What to Bring

Coming prepared makes the difference between a great day and an uncomfortable one. The desert is dry and the sun is strong, so a little planning goes a long way.

Leave anything heavy in the vehicle. You want your hands free for the short scrambles, and a lighter pack makes the walk far more pleasant.

Why Book Direct with a Local Guide

The canyon is remote, and getting there involves a few hours on the road through open desert. Going with someone who knows the route, the timing and the terrain means you arrive at the right time of day, walk the canyon safely, and actually understand what you are looking at rather than just passing through.

I keep my groups small and my pace calm. I will point out the mineral bands in the rock, find the best light for your photos, and make sure you have water and shade when you need it. Booking direct with me means no long chain of middlemen, a clear and fair price, and a day built around what you want to see. Message me on WhatsApp at +20 114 778 9372 and tell me your dates and group size, and I will sort the rest.

Frequently asked questions

How far is the Coloured Canyon from Sharm El Sheikh?

The canyon is near Nuweiba in the Sinai interior, around a two to three hour drive from Sharm El Sheikh depending on traffic and your pickup point. The desert scenery along the way is part of the experience, and I usually build in a short stop or two.

Is the Coloured Canyon walk safe for beginners?

Yes. It is an easy-to-moderate walk on mostly sand and smooth rock, with only a few short and simple climbs. As long as you have reasonable mobility and grippy shoes, you will be fine. I am beside you at every tricky spot to help with footing.

Can I combine the Coloured Canyon with Dahab or the Blue Hole?

You can. The canyon sits on the way to Dahab, so many guests add lunch in Dahab and a swim or snorkel at the Blue Hole to make a full day of desert and coast. Just let me know and I will plan the route to fit.

What should I wear for the Coloured Canyon?

Closed shoes or trainers with good grip, light and breathable clothing, and a hat. Long trousers are handy for the narrow climbs. Avoid sandals and flip-flops, since parts of the floor are rocky and uneven.

Is the Coloured Canyon good for children?

It suits families with older children who enjoy walking and exploring; the narrow passages are exciting for them. It is less ideal for very young kids or anyone who tires quickly on uneven ground. Tell me their ages and I will give honest advice.

How much does the Coloured Canyon tour cost?

Price depends on your group size, your pickup location, and whether you add Dahab or the Blue Hole. I do not list fixed prices because every trip is a little different. Message me on WhatsApp and I will give you a fair, clear quote.
